Connect the Schools Project 2017

Under the “Connect the Schools Project”, a total of eight (8) teachers’ colleges throughout the country have been connected to the internet. The project has funded the establishment and provision of internet service to the schools for a 2-year period, beyond which the individual schools are expected to develop capacity to sustain the internet service. The project was completed at cost of around K2.6 million.

The NICTA UAS Connect the Schools project 2017 was a focused effort by Papua New Guinea’s National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) to revolutionize education through enhanced digital connectivity. Recognizing the critical role of teachers’ colleges in shaping the nation’s future, the project aimed to provide these institutions with reliable internet access. This initiative was driven by the understanding that digital literacy and access to online resources are essential for modern education, enabling educators and future teachers to stay abreast of current pedagogical practices and access a wealth of learning materials.

The project’s implementation involved connecting eight teachers’ colleges across Papua New Guinea, with NICTA funding the internet services for a two-year period. This strategic investment was designed to establish a sustainable model, encouraging the colleges to develop the capacity to maintain these services independently. Beyond mere connectivity, the project also included the provision of computer equipment, ensuring that the institutions had the necessary tools to utilize the newly established internet access effectively. This holistic approach underscored the commitment to not only providing infrastructure but also empowering educators with the means to integrate ICT into their teaching practices.

As part of NICTA’s broader Universal Access and Services (UAS) initiatives, the Connect the Schools project 2017 represented a significant stride towards bridging the digital divide in Papua New Guinea’s education sector. By prioritizing teachers’ colleges, the project aimed to create a ripple effect, empowering educators who would, in turn, equip future generations with the digital skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. This initiative highlights the importance of investing in ICT infrastructure to foster educational development and contribute to the nation’s long-term growth.
