PNG Rural Communication Project

PNG Rural Communication Project

We are bridging the digital divide in Papua New Guinea by bringing better communication and broadband access to rural communities and institutions. Our initiatives focus on improving essential communication tools and building reliable high-speed internet networks for homes, businesses, and public services.

PNG Rural Communication Project

This initiative, supported by a US$15 million partnership with the World Bank, is improving access to vital communication tools. Initially managed by then Papua New Guinea Telecommunications and Radiocommunications Technology Authority (PANGTEL), the project transitioned to National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) in 2010.

Community and institutional Broadband networks

This program is focused on establishing and improving broadband networks across Papua New Guinea, bringing high-speed internet to communities and institutions. Our goal is to provide affordable, reliable broadband access to public institutions, local businesses, and households in selected areas.

Expanding Broadband Access and Services

Extending network links to areas currently lacking sufficient high-capacity signals, enabling community-wide broadband access. Establishing publicly available fixed and mobile broadband services for residents, businesses, and other customers.

Establishing Community ICT Centres (CICs)

Providing direct broadband connections to essential public institutions, such as schools, health facilities, local government offices, and community centres. These centres offer internet access, computers, ICT services, and training to local citizens, empowering them with digital skills. These centres offer internet access, computers, ICT services, and training to local citizens, empowering them with digital skills.

Connecting Key Institutions

Creating public access CICs within each designated community, connected to the broadband network. Where demand exists, we also connect other community resource centers that facilitate ICT access for all community members.
